Co-operation with Codex Alimentarius Commission
The Role of Agricultural and Food Quality Inspection.
The Codex Alimentarius Commission was created in 1963 by FAO and WHO to develop food standards, guidelines and related texts such as codes of practice under the Joint FAO/WHO Food Standards Programme. The main purposes of this Programme are protecting health of the consumers and ensuring fair trade practices in the food trade and promoting coordination of all food standards work undertaken by international governmental and non-governmental organizations.
The Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) has its subsidiary bodies: Codex Committees on General Principles, Milk and Milk Products, Food Additives and Contaminants, Food Hygiene, Food Labeling, Methods of Analysis and Sampling, Pesticide Residues, Residues of Veterinary Drugs in Food, Food Import and Export Certification and Inspection Systems, Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses, Fresh Fruits and Vegetables, Processed Fruits and Vegetables, Fats and Oils, Meat Hygiene, Fish and Fishery Products. Also CAC has 6 Coordinating Committees e.g. Asia, Europe, Africa and Intergovernmental Task Forces. There are many adjourned sine die committees e.g.: Cereals, Pulses and Legumes, Soups and Broths.
Agricultural and Food Quality Inspection acts as the FAO/WHO Codex Contact Point for Poland and performs its function according to the Codex Alimentarius Commission ”Procedural Manual” and the Decision of the Council of European Union of 11 November 2003 No 822/EC on the accession of the European Community to the Codex Alimentarius Commission.
Codex Contact Point (CCP) coordinates the national activities connected with codex work including achievement of consensus on matters subject to the Codex Alimentarius with all interested and involved authorities, official control bodies, research and scientific institutes, consumer associations and stakeholders. CCP ensures that all Codex drafts and final texts (standards, codes of practise, guidelines and other advisory texts) are circulated to all concerned in Poland. CCCP coordinates participation of Polish delegates into Codex sessions and maintains up-dated library of Codex Alimentarius. Promotes Codex Alimentarius activities.
Codex Contact Point is also the leader for cooperation with the EU Council Codex Alimentarius Working Party.
